FAQs
What is a Lactation Consultant?
A lactation consultant is a healthcare professional who provides evidence-based information and support to help with breastfeeding-related issues.
What does IBCLC mean?
International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant.
An IBCLC has passed a fully accredited exam made by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE). Prerequisites for the board examination include thousands of hours of clinical work and dozens of educational credits in Anatomy & Physiology, Cultural Diversity, Psychology & Counseling, Child Development, and Nutrition (just to name a few!). The IBLCE certification is recognized as the Gold Standard for health professionals working with breastfeeding women, and all IBCLCs are required to adhere to the IBLCE’s Professional Standards.
When should I call an IBCLC?
It is best to have a prenatal consultation, especially for first time moms. After delivery moms are exhausted and it is not the optimal time for a crash course in breastfeeding. However, if need be, we make it work; IBCLCs can help at any point, and are extremely helpful after delivery (upon your return home from the hospital) and during the postpartum period.
Some good examples of when to contact an IBCLC:
Baby is fussy at the breast
Baby’s weight gain is not optimal
Breast pain or soreness, damaged nipples
Mastitis
Pumping questions (proper usage, frequency)
Feeds are taking too long
Oversupply or inadequate supply of milk
Supplementing
Plans for returning back to work
Weaning
You aren’t enjoying your breastfeeding experience and want to enhance your experience
You’ve received conflicting information about breastfeeding and are confused
How do I pay?
I accept Venmo and Zelle. Payment is due at the time of consultation. If you’d like to pay via credit card, just let me know so I can add the 3% processing fee.
Do you accept insurance?
Sadly, I do not accept insurance at this time; however I can provide you with a superbill for you to submit to insurance for reimbursement (I am not responsible if insurance doesn’t reimburse you; it is your responsibility to check if out of network IBCLCs are a reimbursable service under your specific plan).
Can I gift your services to a new mom?
Of course! I always love when mothers, mothers-in-law, former clients, and friends ask if I can help one of their loved ones with breastfeeding consultations.
